Numerous things can happen when the brakes go bad depending on the specific problem. Thankfully, we are brake experts here at our auto service shop. We would be happy to inspect your brakes if you are experiencing any of the problems listed below. Do not take chances. Have the brakes inspected right away if they are acting abnormally.
Illuminated Warning Light
Your engine control unit, which is the main computer chip in your automobile, may turn on the ABS or Brake light if the brake system is having a problem. This light can turn on when the brake fluid is too low or the ABS is malfunctioning.
Leaking Brown/Red Fluid
If the brake fluid is too low, you may see brown or red fluid on the garage floor. If the brake lines are leaking, the fluid will be around your wheels. If the master cylinder is leaking, the fluid will be underneath the engine.
Overheating/Burning Odors
Your brakes can also overheat if they are going bad. When this happens, they will squeal constantly and release burning odors. Specifically, overheated brake pads can smell like a burning carpet. Overheated brake fluid smells like burning chemicals.
Soft/Squishy Brake Pedal
The level of resistance that the brake pedal gives you can also change if the brake system needs to be repaired. For example, if you have air bubbles in the brake lines, the pedal will feel soft and give and take. If the pedal is squishy and sinks all the way to the floor, it may be time for a new master cylinder.
Squealing/Grinding Noises
As we mentioned above, the brakes will squeal if they are overheating. They may also squeal if the brake pads are not insulated or if the pads are too low. If the brake pad surface has worn off completely, you will hear grinding or scraping noises when you apply the brakes.
Vibration/Wobbling/Shaking
Finally, your automobile should not shake or vibrate when you apply the brakes. If you feel any strange sensation, such as wobbling or vibrating, it may be time to install new rotors in the brake system. Your vehicle may also need new calipers if it pulls to the side when you apply the brakes.
The brake system is the most important safety system on your automobile. As such, make sure to have the system inspected if you are having any of the problems listed above. It is also a good idea to have the system inspected every 12,000 miles. Call us today to schedule an appointment.
