Is Your Car’s A/C Compressor Failing?

Is Your Car's A/C Compressor Failing?

You may have already noticed that your air conditioning isn’t working as well as it used to, but you might not know why or what to do about it. While there are a number of reasons that your car’s A/C compressor could be failing, from a refrigerant leak to more serious wear and tear, knowing the signs can help you pinpoint the problem before it becomes too big of an issue. Here is what you need to look for to determine if your A/C compressor is failing.

What Does the A/C Compressor do?

A/C compressors are pumping refrigerant through the A/C system. Without them, you’d be stuck with a hot car during summer months; A/C compressors help regulate temperatures in vehicles by working in conjunction with the other components of your car’s A/C to cool warm air. On average, a car A/C compressor lasts the life of your vehicle–but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to tell when yours is on its last legs. Here are some signs you need a new compressor and what you can do about it.

Signs of a Failing Compressor

The first sign of a failing compressor is the car’s air conditioner not working. Air flowing through the vents will not be cold, or cooling will be sporadic. This is usually caused by a problem with the compressor, which is being supplied with power by the engine via it’s serpentine belt. In some cases, though, the issue could be caused by something else–for example, the most common cause of poor A/C performance is leaking refrigerant.

Is it Refrigerant or the Compressor?

Several types refrigerant used in car air conditioners, however most car A/C systems use R-134A, but this can vary by make and model. The best way to tell if low refrigerant is causing you’re A/C problems is to have the levels checked. This is a simple procedure your mechanic can do in a matter of minutes. If the refrigerant level is normal, it’s a good bet that the compressor is the cause of you’re A/C problems.

What to do if the Compressor is Bad?

When your car’s compressor is broken you need to consult with your mechanic to determine whether replacement with a new compressor or a used compressor will be best. Sometimes used compressors can save you money on the repair, but it can be difficult to predict how long they will last.

If your car’s A/C has you feeling the heat more than usual, see your mechanic to get your A/C cooling again.
